City crews responding to slick spots

Trash and recycling to resume Jan. 9

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department crews continue to respond to requests for service at reported slick spots on City streets. Sand is being applied to hills and slick spots as temperatures are below the level at which salt and chemicals are effective. Crews will continue working throughout the weekend.

With weather forecasts calling for a warming trend beginning Sunday, Jan. 10, it is anticipated that temperatures will reach a level at which salt will become effective. At that time, salt will be spread as needed to help melt the packed snow and ice accumulated on residential streets. When the packed snow and ice soften, plows should be able to remove it from streets.

The City's Public Works, Parks and Recreation and Water Services departments collaborate to remove snow and ice from approximately 900 miles of primary and arterial routes and maintain a passable driving lane on more than 1,800 miles of residential routes.

The Public Works Department’s Solid Waste Division, which suspended trash and recycling collections to limit crews from exposure to extreme cold, will resume collections Saturday, Jan. 9. Residents with regular Friday collection are asked to place trash and recycling curbside by 7 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9. The delayed collection will occur on either Saturday or Sunday, Jan. 9 or Jan. 10, as crews will work half days during the weekend.

Because many residents have experienced trash or recycling service delays and misses during the recent winter weather events, the City will waive the two-bag limit for trash collection through Friday, Jan. 15. This temporary policy change will allow residents the opportunity to discard excess trash that may have accumulated due to missed collections.

Residents in need of assistance related to City services can contact the City’s 3-1-1 Action Center, a division of the City Manager's Office, by dialing 311 or (816) 513-1313. Regular business hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Requests for service also can be submitted online at http://www.kcmo.org.

Media inquiries about the City’s solid waste services and snow and ice removal on City streets should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer for the Public Works Department, (816) 513-2659.
