|Water Services Department - Stormwater Utility
The Kansas City, Mo., Stormwater Utility Division, a division of the City’s Water Services Department, was established to address stormwater quality and quantity issues facing Kansas City. The Utility’s stormwater quality management works with other City Departments and its residents to do the maximum extent possible to mitigate stormwater pollution.
Stormwater is anything that travels into the stormwater system and can originate in many ways including rain, snow or even watering. This water flows untreated directly into nearby wetlands, lakes, streams and rivers.
The Stormwater Utility Division:
- Addresses infrastructure problems, (i.e., clean out of clogged storm structures, repair and replacement of curb inlets).Coordinates stormwater policy within the City and represents the City in regional stormwater planning;Provides stormwater education through various initiatives such as providing information and guidance to what City departments and residents can do to mitigate stormwater runoff and improve water quality; Sends informational flyers within stormwater billings on water quality/non-point source pollution, supports grassroots efforts, (i.e., stream and river clean-up events, stream teams, and watershed associations); and Encourages the public to become actively involved in activities in their communities to enhance and sustain water habitats within the City.
- As part of the Wet Weather Solutions Program, has conducted 35 Watershed Master Plans to assess the condition of existing stormwater infrastructure and facilities and identify needed improvements.
Additionally, a comprehensive city-wide plan was developed called the KC-One Stormwater Management Plan. This plan clarifies responsibilities within the City, recommends policies and procedures, establishes priorities, provides timelines and schedules, and offers funding recommendations.
Federal and state mandates require the City to be in compliance with the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit issued by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources which addresses the Federal Clean Water Act and the Missouri’s Clean Water Law.
