| How a Mobile Collection Event Works |
Mobile HHW collection events are operated by a crew of trained city personnel. Volunteers from the neighborhood or community in which the collection is taking place help with traffic control and record-keeping.
HHW mobile collection events usually takes place at a school, church, or other public parking lot. Such locations are ideal, since they are generally large and allow safe collection of the material and a good flow of traffic to serve as many individuals as possible in the time allowed for the event.
Materials are collected and packed into trucks licensed for the safe transportation of these materials. The materials that are collected include household chemicals and cleaners, pesticides, flammables, batteries, antifreeze, motor oil and paint.
These events are funded by the City of Kansas City, Mo., and the Mid-America Regional Council Solid Waste Management District. Residents of Kansas City, Mo., and participating communities are welcome to use this service when it occurs in their area.
Businesses, rental property owners and not-for-profit organizations are not allowed to use this service due to the restrictions imposed by the program funding.
Materials collected at HHW mobile events are recycled or disposed of through one of the city's hazardous materials contractors. Materials that are in good condition are offered back to the community through our Swap Shop .
