The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department and the United States Department of Energy launched a two-year test of light emitting diode (LED) technology for street lighting. The test will provide data to determine the viability of transitioning City streetlights to LED technology, which is estimated to yield energy and maintenance savings in the range of 30 to 50 percent. Prior to LED installation, illumination and reflectivity data was collected from existing high pressure sodium vapor streetlights during the evening and overnight hours. After the LED installation data was also collected. Throughout the test, data will be collected to understand how the systems age and how the quality of light emitted changes over time. Nine locations have been equipped with LED streetlights to provide a thorough understanding of how LEDs function in different environments.
