The core of the Bike KC plan is a phased network of on-street bicycle facilities that serve a transportation purpose. Adopted by Ordinance, the 600-mile bicycle facilities network is located on both exisiting and future city streets. The bike routes follow local residential streets, as well as existing and planned arterial roads. The first phase of the system to be implemented is a 200-mile segment of signed Bicycle Routes and Share the Road signs. Before the signage can be installed, hazardous water inlets, storm drain grates and utility covers needed to be mitigated. That work has been completed and the signage will be installed in 2012. $1.8 million of federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quaility funds along with a local match were secured to implement Phase 1 of the Bike KC plan.
Bike KC and the Major Street Plan.
Adoption of the bicycle facilitites into the Major Street Plan enables the City to require right-of-way dedication for future bike lanes. The dedication of right-of-way, approximately 8 to 12 feet, will allow for the future development of bicycle lanes as demand warrants. Inclusion of the routes in the plan also helps ensure that new bridges along the bicycle routes will be constructed to accommodate bicycle facilities, and options for obtaining future federal funds are enhanced.
Bicycle Facilities Design Standards
The design of on-street bicycle facilities, including bike lanes, sharrows, wide curb lanes, and signed routes, must be compliant with federal AASHTO design standards and MUTCD signage standards. Typical cross sections for the bicycle facilities are included in the Major Street Plan. Download the Standards.
Bicycle Carriers on KCATA Buses.
The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) recognizes the importance of inter-modal connections. KCATA's "Bike-N-Bus" service has installed bicycle carriers on 98 percent of the bus routes. All new buses ordered by the KCATA are equipped with the bicycle carriers. The carriers are mounted on the front of the bus securely holding two bicycles. For more information, visit the ATA's Bike-N-Bus program.
Bicycle Parking
Proving bicycle parking at end-trip destinations and transit park-and-ride facilities is a great way to encourage bicycling for transportation. The Inverted-U style bicycle parking racks, is the adopeted standard for the City. This style rack can easily accomodate U-Locks as well as cable locks for convenient access. The simple design allows for the most versitale placement as either a stand alone rack or a series of several racks to meet the demands for bicycle parking. Bicycle parking is a visible sign of a bicycle friendly city.
