The
Nuisance Abatement Program is designed to help handle the backlog of nuisance code violations in Kansas City, Missouri's neighborhoods, particularly mowing of rank weeds. Contracts for mowing abatement are issued daily for cases that are not handled in
an appropriate amount of time by the property owner, whose property is then assessed for the cost abatement contract, plus an administrative fee. As of the 2010 growing season, the program also mows and cleans the 2,226
Land Trust lots in the city, and several hundred city-owned lots.
Status of the 2010 growing season
Funding for the 2010 growing season was budgeted at $860,000 for privately-owned and city-owned lots and $180,000 for Land Trust lots; most of that money is now exhausted. A small portion of funding remains for cleaning city lots and emergency situations on a case-by-case determination; other cases referred will be placed on a waiting list pending additional funding or the next fiscal year. Nuisance Abatement cleaned approximately 2300 private lots and mowed/cleaned almost all Land Trust lots twice during the growing season. Private lots that were referred to the program after 2009-2010 funding expired were the first priority. Below can be found summaries of the work completed, in the field, and on our waiting list.
