KCMO Air Quality Program Smoke School Training

Smoke School

The Air Quality Program offers educational training on visible emission to provide certification for individuals working in the industrial field who deal with air pollution and quality control issues. This course is offered twice each year, once in the spring and fall.

The training will be held at the Birmingham Treatment Plant at 10801 N.E. 28th St., Kansas City, Mo., 64161. The Birmingham Treatment Plant is located just east of the Ameristar Casino and off of 210 Highway. For directions to the facility, call (816) 513-6314.

Registration is required for this class, please register online or download the printable registration form and mail to the Air Quality Program. The non-refundable registration fee is $150 and due prior to receiving your certificate.

Class Information

A classroom session is offered each fall and is geared towards first time attendees. If you plan on attending the classroom session, please make sure to indicate this on your registration form.

Copies of classroom materials can be obtained upon request. Call (816) 513-6314 to request materials.

Detailed information on the certification process, please refer to 40 CFR Part 60, Appendix A, Method 9.

All attendees should complete several tests after passing their test. This will help avoid false passing and will provide everyone with more practice.

Each facility should be recording opacity readings in the field. You can use the Sample Opacity Records Form if you do not currently have one. This is a suggested format from Method 9; other forms may be used as long as the information listed in Section 2 Method 9 is recorded.
