In order to open a new food establishment, or change the existing configuration of a current food establishment, you MUST submit building and construction plans to the City’s Development Services (formerly Codes Administration) for review and approval by a food inspector. This MUST be done before work can begin. Along with the submittal to the City’s Development Services, you must also submit a Plan Review Audit Form to the Food Protection Program. Who must submit a Plan Review Audit Form? Any food establishment that is planning on: - Construction, conversion or renovation of a food establishment – including restaurants, bars or taverns and institutions (schools, hospitals)
- Remodeling of existing kitchens and other uses involving food preparation for public consumption – including grocery stores, cafeterias and convenience stores.
How long will it take for the approval process to be completed? The Food Protection Program can typically process building plan reviews within two weeks. This time frame does not include the time needed for the City’s Development Services Department to complete their approvals. Please refer to their Web site for additional information regarding their process. Are there other permits that I will be required to get from the Food Protection Program? Yes. All food establishments are required to have a valid Food Establishment Permit on file with the Health Department. You are also required to post this permit for your customers to see. A complete Food Establishment Permit application should be filed at least 30 days prior to your planned opening. At least two weeks prior to your establishment opening, a pre-opening inspection should be scheduled. A Health Department Permit will not be issued until the appropriate permit fees are paid and the Health Department approves the food establishment for operation.
