What is CDCynergy?
The Division of Health Education and Health Communication offers training on how to use the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s CDCynergy, which is an interactive CD ROM. CDCynergy functions as a tool or job aid for health educators who work in public health settings. It is:
  • Computer-based and interactive
  • Packed with tools and resources for every phase of program planning
  • Tested and proven to be effective for planning health education interventions
  • Easy to use and appropriate for any public health professional who designs and implements educational interventions.

How can CDCynergy training benefit public health educators?
CDCynergy helps health educators decide how to systematically conceptualize, plan, implement, and evaluate educational interventions in a public health context. This CD ROM provides a full, step-by-step tutorial for developing a health communication plan. The most remarkable aspect of CDCynergy is the amount and type of resources that come with the CD itself. Every phase of the planning process is packed with many links, tools, resources, media examples, references and online tools. Instead of just telling the health educator what to do, it also provides a description of how to achieve the activities in each phase of program planning, and provides specific examples with each step.

To begin this process, health educators can apply for a one-day training, which requires them to install the CD on their own computer and do a self-assessment. During the subsequent training, class participants have the opportunity to explore the CD program in a structured environment and become familiar with this interactive tool. At the end of class, participants will have mastered the planning process and will be able to develop a health communications plan for any health education problem, whether it is tobacco prevention, infant mortality, child safety, diabetes management, lack of physical exercise or injury prevention.

The six planning phases included in CDCynergy
This health communication/health education planning tool consists of six phases which correspond to the seven health education core competencies: Assisting, planning, implementing, evaluating, coordinating, acting as a resource, and communicating health and health education needs. The six planning phases in CDCynergy are:

  1. Defining and describing the problem(s)
  2. Analyzing the problems
  3. Identifying and profiling audiences
  4. Developing communication strategies and tactics
  5. Developing an evaluation plan
  6. Launching the plan and obtaining feedback
