The City Security Division was created in 1997 originally as part of the City Manager's Office. The mission of the division is to increase the level of security protecting employees and assets. Since the establishment of the division, City Security has taken on a more active supervisory role at City facilities (with the exception of the Aviation and Water Services departments). 

The division manages contractual employees and full-time City employees at City facilities throughout Kansas City area.

Sites managed by security include:

• City Hall
• Convention and  Entertainment
• Bruce R Watkins Cultural Center
• Health Department
• Municipal Court
• Mohart Community Center
• American Jazz Museum
• Public Works District III
• Parks and Recreation Headquarters

The division manages sites with help from patrolling security officers, closed circuit television surveillance cameras and electronic access control. The division provides tenant partnering for the employees and departments that are being served.
