The Risk Management Division of the City’s General Services Department was founded in 1998. Prior to hiring a professional risk manager, duties of purchasing insurance were performed in the Procurement Division, known as Purchasing at the time.
With the development of a division dedicated solely to the practice of enterprise risk management, a comprehensive effort to identify risk, properly fund risk and transfer or manage risk was initiated.
In addition to the risk management endeavor, the workers’ compensation claims administration was moved from the Health Department to the Risk Management Division, which greatly improved service to injured employees and streamlined the entire claims administrative process.
