In 1998, the Fire Department began using the Kids' Safety Trailer for various educational presentations. The Kids' Safety Trailer is a custom-designed trailer which includes a living room, kitchen and child's bedroom complete with fire alarms, smoke simulation, TV/video monitoring capabilities and heated door sensors. Certain common household amenities such as a microwave, a stove/oven, refrigerator, computer and fireplace are also in the trailer to provide the children with a representation of a realistic home setting. The Safety Trailer specifically targets children grades K-3 in an attempt to promote fire safety education. The goal is to decrease Kansas City's fire injuries and fire fatalities.
Fire safety/prevention presentations are given year-round. The Kids' Safety Trailer is available (weather permitting) spring through fall. Public Education Specialists give safety presentations year round touching on subjects such as Stop Drop and Roll, Exit Drills in the Home, Smoke Alarms and much more. They also set up fire department displays for home shows and conferences.
