The Fire Prevention Division of the Kansas City, Missouri Fire Department will continually strive to increase life safety for the residents of this city by reducing community risk through an aggressive public education program, fire code enforcement, building plans review and fire cause determination.
Public education
Using the concepts and ideas molded around fire safety and education, the Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department has established a firm foundation for building a safer city. The area of public education has traditionally been one of the first budget items reduced in fire department budgets throughout the United States. This practice may be the one major contributing factors causing our nation to have one of the highest death rates, per capita, in the world. Fire departments must find new and different approaches to gain the awareness of the citizens they serve.
The concept of preventing fires is found in almost every fire department's mission statement. As the department looks to the future, it must recognize oversights of the past and find better ways to educate citizens and prevent the needless loss of life due to fire.
