Role of the City Plan Commission

The City Plan Commission conducts public hearings on applications for rezoning of property, approval of development plans or amendments to approved development plans, subdivision of land, street and alley vacations, land use and street widening plans and other types of applications and plans that involve development or redevelopment of property and of plans for the future physical development of Kansas City.

The Commission receives a report of the application from the staff of the City Planning and Development Department, receives information from the applicant regarding their application and hears testimony from other persons that may express concerns, opposition or support of the application. The Commission considers all of the information presented to them and makes recommendations to approve, modify or deny the application based on the requirements of the Zoning Ordinance, the Subdivision Regulations, adopted land use plans and other planning documents and policies which are all intended to promote the public health, safety and general welfare of the City.

The Commission conducts public hearings in the Council Chamber on the 26th Floor of City Hall on the first and third Tuesdays of every month.
