Dear resident: Welcome to another edition of my monthly newsletter. I enjoy sharing the latest news on how the City is working for you. Business customer service center opens New and existing businesses in Kansas City now can receive assistance from the City’s new BizCare business customer service center. The center is located just west of City Hall on the ground floor of the Ed Wolf Parking Garage at 1118 Oak St. The center provides businesses operating within the city with resource materials, access to computers and information and assistance in understanding and complying with city, state and federal requirements for operating a business. More. Weed/mowing programs are in full swing The growing season is in full swing and the City has begun its scheduled mowing and cleaning of more than 3,500 acres of property across the City. Mowing operations will continue through the end of the growing season in October. The City also has undertaken an aggressive enforcement policy in dealing with properties in violation of City code. The policy involves cleaning the properties and assessing property owners for an administrative fee and clean-up costs. More. 2009 Street Resurfacing program under way The City is in the process of repaving more than 261 miles of streets and resealing more than 75 miles of roads throughout the City. The streets that are selected for improvements are determined by a rating system that takes into account volume of traffic, types of vehicles using the street and the type of street. The work will continue through the summer and into the fall. See the map and list of streets be to be resurfaced in 2009 here. Housing department continues to make strides The City is one step closer to regaining control of its housing assets after receiving notification from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that our Asset Transfer and Capacity Building Plan has been approved. The approval allows the City to proceed with getting final court approval of the plan. The federal approval is part of the City’s process to regain control of its assets, which are currently being held in receivership. More. New parking service at KCI The Aviation Department has announced a new valet parking option near Kansas City International Airport, at Park Air Express. The service presents travelers with a unique service combination not currently offered at KCI’s other parking areas. Development and innovation continue to occur at KCI, and the department also recently was notified that its Recycling Committee was selected by the Missouri Recycling Association to receive the 2009 award for Outstanding Leadership in Recycling. Neighborhood and Community Services Department director retires Les Washington, who has served as director of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department for the last seven years, retired this month after 24 years as a City employee. As a well-respected and valuable director who had great knowledge of the City and its residents, Les’s absence will be felt at City Hall and throughout the community. However, I am pleased to announce that Deputy Director David Park will serve as acting director.
