Dear resident: Thank you for subscribing to Insight, my monthly message. I enjoy sharing the latest news on how the City is working for you. 'Green' sales tax holiday April 19-25 The City has made a pledge to promote sustainability at all levels and we are showing the commitment to that pledge by participating in the Missouri Show Me Green Sales Tax Holiday, from April 19-25. The holiday exempts state and city sales tax on retail sales of qualifying Energy Star certified new appliances, up to $1,500 per appliance.
The City is one of 56 cities in Missouri that, based on a resolution adopted by City Council, will be participating in the tax holiday, and is the largest city to be part of the program. More.
Electric vehicles to be built at KCI Airport Smith Electric Vehicles U.S. Corp. announced that it will assemble zero-emission all-electric trucks in a portion of the former American Airlines overhaul base at Kansas City International Airport. The company will use 80,000 square feet of the reverted 280,000-square-foot building, and plans to employ 120 workers by 2010.
The development marks another major milestone in the City's ongoing strategy to enhance KCI's status as a major regional center for manufacturing, intermodal shipping and commercial development. More.
Aim4Peace has positive impact on East Patrol area The University of Kansas Work Group for Community Health and Development recently completed an annual evaluation report examining the development and implementation of the Aim4Peace program from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2008. The report concluded that, although Aim4Peace is a relatively new program, it has contributed to positive changes in the East Patrol target area. Preliminary data presented in the report suggests that Aim4Peace may be beginning to contribute to community changes that will support improved rates of homicides and aggravated assaults over time. Kansas City International Airport will receive $7 million in federal stimulus The Aviation Department also announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation will award KCI a $7 million grant funded under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for rehabilitation of runways 1R/19L and 9/27, taxiways and aprons.
Planning was already under way for the project, which is required to be eligible for stimulus grant funding. The work will entail partial concrete slab removal and replacement, joint seal replacement, pavement marking and replacement, and tire rubber removal. More. City Council passes dress code ordinance After much debate, the City Council unanimously approved a committee substitute ordinance that prohibits businesses in taxpayer-subsidized developments from arbitrarily defining accessories and some types of clothing worn. It also requires businesses with such dress codes to post phone numbers of Human Relations officials and company representatives who can respond to complaints.
As always, I appreciate your feedback. Please feel free to e-mail questions and comments to my office at Insight@kcmo.org. Sincerely, Wayne A. Cauthen City manager City of Kansas City, Mo. |
