The Office of Environmental Quality, a division of the City Manager's Office, was established to ensure all City government actions are performed in an environmentally responsible manner. We promote City policies that encourage the private sector to preserve and enhance environmental quality and provide regional leadership for the public, private, and non-profit sectors on environmental affairs and sustainability. To encourage residents to act as stewards of the environment by informing them of individual and corporate choices they can make. Through partnerships, to provide services and opportunities people can use to improve the quality of their environment. To help transform City government into an efficient organization that models environmental stewardship by assisting City departments in performing their operations and managing their facilities in compliance with environmental laws and regulations.What we do
Environmental Compliance – Ensure regulatory compliance in City facilities by promoting environmental stewardship among all City employees and implementing the City’s Environmental Management System (EMS).
Clean Air – Oversee the City's internal response system to elevated, ground-level ozone alerts.
Recycling – Coordinate and promote the City's internal recycling program.
Sustainability – Develop and implement the Kansas City, Mo. Climate Protection Plan, Kansas City's response to global climate change. We also provide staff support to the Climate Protection Plan Steering Committee and Work Groups and participate in the City's Green Solutions Steering Committee.
HUD Reviews – Conduct environmental reviews on all HUD funded projects to access potential environmental impact.
Environmental Liaison – Promote and maintain relationships with external organizations, collaborating with the public and private sectors to preserve and enhance environmental quality. We also provide staff support to the Environmental Management Commission and represent the City in the Byproduct Synergy Initiative, the MARC Air Quality Forum, the Environmental Excellence Business Network, and the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Climate Protection Partnership. Our local partners also include Kansas City Power & Light, Missiouri Gas Energy, the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce and the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
