The Environmental Management Commission (EMC) welcomes the opportunity to add new members who can contribute their energy and skills to the work of the commission. Members are appointed by the mayor for three year terms. Current members contribute several hours of volunteer work per month.
Mission Statement |
The Environmental Management Commission shall promote environmental awareness and resource efficiency to the City's leaders and staff, in order to assist the progress of Kansas City toward sustainability. |
The commission was created by ordinance to:
Review plans, budgets, programs and actions of the City that substantially impact the natural environment.
Prepare and promote ongoing comprehensive plans for reducing the environmental impacts of the City.
Monitor the City's actions for compliance with state and federal environmental laws and regulations.
Meetings
Second Wednesday of the month
4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Rivergate Center, second floor
600 Broadway, Kansas City, MO
Procedures
The commission meets on a monthly basis for two hours and regular attendance is required of all members. Commission issues are presented by EMC Committees, the City of Kansas City, Mo., outside government agencies and interested third parties at these meetings. Agenda items are reviewed and voted on at the meetings. New items are assigned to committees for research and recommendations. Membership on committees is open to people who are not commissioners. The work of the commission is supported by the staff of the Office of Environmental Quality.
Guidelines for commissioners
All members of the commission are asked to join at least one standing committee. Standing committees meet monthly, depending upon their issues, for one to two hours. Committees gather necessary information to present to the Commission for discussion and approval. Members may be asked to conduct research to assist the committee. Committees also may include members outside of the commission.
Environmental experience or education is not necessary to become a member, although most members have a strong interest in environmental protection. Through the activities, meetings and information presented, members and interested volunteers have the opportunity to gain the background environmental knowledge to contribute to the work of the commission. The commission asks that members have a desire to contribute to the building of a sustainable city.
