Capital Projects Department

Administrative Support Intern
Intern will provide clerical support and customer reception to project team members under the direct supervision of Manager of Administrative Services.
Responsibilities include: drafting and producing various correspondences, reports, spreadsheets and memos as requested by team members; processing and distributing incoming mail and package deliveries, including date stamping and distribution of time sensitive materials; maintenance of department informational materials and dissemination to staff and public; maintaining inventory of existing computer hardware and software and coordination of equipment maintenance; appropriately handling phone and public contacts; and assisting Records Manager with preparing records for archiving, scanning, copying and filing documents. Journalism Intern
This position will consult with and assist capital project managers and the Communications Manager with public relations needs including news releases, news conferences, groundbreaking and/or dedication events, public meetings, website content, newsletter articles, fliers and brochures.
Responsibilities include written communication, presentations, events, promotions and media relations as related to Capital Projects Department projects and initiatives. Capital Project Manager Intern
This position will provide assistance to capital project managers in the oversight of one or more capital improvement projects. The intern will be responsible for assisting professional engineering or architectural staff in the management of major engineering or architecture projects in the Transportation, Bridge or Public Buildings fields. This internship provides exposure to the planning, design, development, construction, renovation, maintenance and operation of capital improvements. Intern will gain experience in the planning, directing and coordinating of project delivery teams as well as coordinating activities with other divisions and departments in compliance with ordinances, statutes, department and City policies. Field work at major construction sites required. Priority given to college students in their 3rd+ year of a degree program.

Contract Management Intern
Interns will assist the EnergyWorks KC Contract Manager in the management of contacts/contractors necessary to implement the program. The intern will work collaboratively with the sub-recipients of the EnergyWorks KC initiative, program staff, and the community. Facilities Intern

Parks and Recreation Department

Parks and Recreation Interns
Interns will work closely with recreation professionals in various recreational settings, research best recreational practices and trends. Specific job tasks will be to assist with the planning and implementation of the summer programs/activities/events in the Parks and Recreation Department. Intern will be expected to provide leadership skills, be actively engaged, enthusiastic, and display exceptional customer service.
Position Types: Summer internships
Minimum qualifications: Desired Background: preferred experience/coursework in education, physical education, recreation, sports, arts and crafts or other relevant work and a working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Excel, PowerPoint, intranet and Adobe. Preferred intern must have good people skills and able to work within a dynamic work environment.

Grounds Intern
This position will perform duties such as Litter control, mowing (weed eater work and walk behind push mower), assist with light construction work such as carpentry, concrete and asphalt work and plumbing. This is a labor intensive position in which the employee will be subjected to all types of weather.

Green House Intern
This position will perform duties such as planting, weeding and deadheading the annual and perennial flower beds. The person would be helping to prepare the flower beds for planting, mulching of perennial beds and pruning of shrub beds. This is a labor intensive position in which the employee will be subjected to all types of weather.

Public Works Department 

Administrative Support Intern
Intern will provide administrative and clerical support for the department under the direct supervision of the Assistant to the Director (Administrative Services).
Responsibilities include: data collection and entry, researching information for administrative projects, draft general correspondence; producing reports and spreadsheets; various customer service activities to include appropriately handling phone calls and public contacts. Maintaining files and records; scanning, copying and distributing documents.
College student with major coursework in business related field and experience with MS Outlook, Word and Excel preferred.
Position Type: Summer Internship
Minimum Qualifications: College student with major in business, management or related field. Some work experience preferred

Bike KC Communications Intern
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, self-starter pursuing a degree in journalism, communications, public relations, graphic design, English, or other related field seeking hands on experience. The intern will be responsible for developing a series of communication tools to inform stakeholders of program and project progress. Sample projects include: produce and edit YouTube style videos of local trails and bike facilities; create a slideshow of local bike/ped amenities that can be streamed on the web; update Facebook and Twitter information and submit postings; write and produce a newsletter; compile active living news of national activities in the field, identify new and innovative forms of communications tools that appeal to the urban professional, and other ideas you may have.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be currently enrolled in college with a minimum sophomore standing and major coursework in any of the above mentioned degrees. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and provide a writing sample. Creative, self-motivated individuals with a positive attitude and innovative thinking encouraged to apply. Interest in bike/pedestrian issues a plus. Position reports to the Bicycle Pedestrian Coordinator in the Public Works Department.

Active Living KC Project Intern
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, self-starter, with strong writing skills, pursuing a degree in urban planning, engineering, or related field seeking hands on experience with multi-modal transportation projects. The intern will be responsible for researching and writing two active living case studies highlighting local projects that have successfully incorporated bicycle and pedestrian amenities and increased physical activity. Additional project support may also be required.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be currently enrolled in college with a minimum junior standing and major coursework in any of the above mentioned degrees. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills and provide a writing sample. Creative, self-motivated individuals with a positive attitude encouraged to apply. Interest in bike/pedestrian issues a plus. Position reports to the Active Living Coordinator in the Public Works Department.

Bicycle Pedestrian Project Intern
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, self-starter, with strong writing skills, and GIS experience pursuing a degree in urban planning, engineering, or related field seeking hands on experience with multi-modal transportation projects. The intern will update bicycle parking map and guidelines; assist with updates to trails map; review bike/trail maps from other cities and provide recommendations for local bike/trail map content and design; review and edit draft bike master plan report and map; and other project support as needed.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be currently enrolled in college with a minimum junior standing and major coursework in any of the above mentioned degrees. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills; provide a writing sample and example of GIS skills/knowledge. Position reports to the Bicycle Pedestrian Coordinator in the Public Works Department.
 

Water Services Department 

Labor Intern
Intern will participate in the installation and replacement of wastewater sewer mains and lateral connections. Repairs manholes and breaks in existing gravity sewers and lateral connections. Uses hand tools and other specialized tools in making sewer cuts, laying new line to grade, reconnecting sewer lines. Participates in the restoration of work site locations, backfilling excavations, dirt work restoration, seeding or sodding, setup of erosion control measures, concrete placement and finishing, tear down and replacement of fences, replacement of landscaping or other structures located on the worksite property, utilizing proper techniques in minimizing damages to existing utilities.

Engineering Intern
Intern will assist with filing of projects, packets and drawings in our file room and familiarize him or herself with engineering drawings, project files and the history and accessibility of projects and the data that is needed from them. Intern will also be responsible for filling out hydrant and valve cards with measurements and locations, data from the drawings as well as assisting with the field marked prints and the review of record drawings submitted by the contractors. This individual will be responsible for taking measurements for the field marked prints on the job sites and assist with flow tests and main shuts. This work will require getting introduced to the actual construction process in the field.

Minimum Qualifications: civil engineering, or some civil engineering preferred.
