Nov. 4, 2011Google might offer TV / phone service over its fiber network "Google has mentioned more than once that its Google TV platform isn't about replacing traditional pay-TV services, and now the Wall Street Journal reports it might be about to offer one of its own. Don't cancel your cable, satellite or IPTV service just yet though, as this would merely be an expansion of the fiber internet it will offer in the Kansas Cities, offering video and phone service as well. Reportedly it's looked into offering channels from the families of Disney, Time Warner and Discovery, but nothing is set in stone at this point. As CBS' attitude towards Apple TV makes clear, actually getting into the service biz can be complicated and costly, but we figure Mountain View has to fill those 1Gbps pipes with something other than Turquoise Jeep videos." The new website educates the community about Google Fiber and creates a dynamic conversation about new ideas, beginning with a video on the home page that illustrates what Google Fiber could mean to Kansas City.
Sept. 20, 2011 Mayors announce members of Bistate Innovation Team for Google projectKansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sylvester James and Unified Government Mayor/CEO Joe Reardon have appointed a Bistate Innovations Team of 12 individuals led by Mike Burke and Dr. Ray Daniels. The goal of the team is to be imaginative, innovative and inspired in recommending ways the Google Ultra High-Speed Fiber (“Google Fiber”) can benefit the KC metro area and its citizens. The group will explore ways the community can use Google Fiber to improve public services; create community; assist and advance education; spark economic development; create jobs; or otherwise improve the standard of life in the KC metro area.
The Innovations Team is charged with creating a playbook that identifies creative uses of the Google infrastructure and how best to market the KC metro’s high-speed fiber connectivity in recruiting business, industry and institutional interests to the area. A key goal of the team is to support the mayors in modeling how communities can effectively cooperate in a strategic, sustained initiative to advance the progress of the region. More.

City selected for Google Fiber
The City will collaborate with Google on the deployment of Google Fiber, an ultra-high speed, fiber-to-the-home broadband network. Kansas City, Mo., is the second city chosen for this innovation and will join Kansas City, Kan., in a regional partnership. This initiative promises to be an incredible opportunity for residents and businesses alike.

Google, the multinational Internet search technologies corporation based in Mountain View, Calif., plans to launch an experiment that it hopes will make Internet access faster and better for everyone. Google plans to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Google Fiber Networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, more than 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. Google plans to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.
