Super fast fiber for Kansas City
By Google, Google Fiber Blog posted July 26, 2012, source Google Fiber

"Our goal is to build products that will help improve our users’ lives. And when it comes to Internet access, it's clear what provides a better user experience:

Fast is better than slow. On the web, nobody wants to wait for a video to buffer or a website to load.
Abundance is better than scarcity. There’s a plethora of rich content available online—and it’s increasingly only available to people who have the speeds and means to access it.
Choice is better than no choice. Competition and choice help make products better for users.

With that in mind, we embarked on a journey to bring ultra-high speeds to Kansas City, Kan. and Kansas City, Mo. And today, we’re excited to announce Google Fiber. Google Fiber is 100 times faster than today’s average broadband. No more buffering. No more loading. No more waiting. Gigabit speeds will get rid of these pesky, archaic problems and open up new opportunities for the web. Imagine: instantaneous sharing; truly global education; medical appointments with 3D imaging; even new industries that we haven’t even dreamed of, powered by a gig . . ."  More.

Google might offer TV / phone service over its fiber network
By Richard Lawler posted Nov 4th, 2011, 5:45AM, source Wall Street Journal

"Google has mentioned more than once that its Google TV platform isn't about replacing traditional pay-TV services, and now the Wall Street Journal reports it might be about to offer one of its own. Don't cancel your cable, satellite or IPTV service just yet though, as this would merely be an expansion of the fiber internet it will offer in the Kansas Cities, offering video and phone service as well. Reportedly it's looked into offering channels from the families of Disney, Time Warner and Discovery, but nothing is set in stone at this point. As CBS' attitude towards Apple TV makes clear, actually getting into the service biz can be complicated and costly, but we figure Mountain View has to fill those 1Gbps pipes with something other than Turquoise Jeep videos." More.

Mayors announce members of Bistate Innovation Team for Google project
Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sylvester James and Unified Government Mayor/CEO Joe Reardon have appointed a Bistate Innovations Team of 12 individuals led by Mike Burke and Dr. Ray Daniels. The goal of the team is to be imaginative, innovative and inspired in recommending ways the Google Ultra High-Speed Fiber (“Google Fiber”) can benefit the KC metro area and its citizens. The group will explore ways the community can use Google Fiber to improve public services; create community; assist and advance education; spark economic development; create jobs; or otherwise improve the standard of life in the KC metro area.

The Innovations Team is charged with creating a playbook that identifies creative uses of the Google infrastructure and how best to market the KC metro’s high-speed fiber connectivity in recruiting business, industry and institutional interests to the area. A key goal of the team is to support the mayors in modeling how communities can effectively cooperate in a strategic, sustained initiative to advance the progress of the region. More.

More. Get involved in Google Fiber for Communities.

Google, the multinational Internet search technologies corporation based in Mountain View, Calif., plans to launch an experiment that it hopes will make Internet access faster and better for everyone. Google plans to test ultra-high speed broadband networks in one or more trial locations across the country. Google Fiber Networks will deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, more than 1 gigabit per second, fiber-to-the-home connections. Google plans to offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people.

Google asked interested municipalities and individuals to provide information about their communities through a Request for Information, due March 26, 2010, which they will use to determine where to build the new Google Fiber Network. The City of Kansas City, Mo., gathered information and responded to Google’s RFI to be considered as a trial location for the Google Fiber Network.
