Dr. Kristine Baker, a chiropractor located in the Pershing building at 2300 Main Street, decided to move to Kansas City from St. Louis last summer. She had little idea what to expect when starting a business. KC Bizcare, the new business customer service center across from City Hall, was exactly what she needed.
A love of chiropractics runs in Baker’s blood. Coming from a family of chiropractors, she starting running the front desk of her family’s practice when she was a kid. From her place behind the desk, she saw people getting well. Patients who never could lift up their grandchildren gained full mobility again. Seeing the improvement in quality of life that comes with chiropractics stuck with Baker. So did the idea of being her own boss.
To be your own boss, Baker says, you have to be a self-starter. There are benefits—like setting your own hours, long lunches, and the possibility of a full-time income on a part-time schedule. However, those perks come at a price. Small business owners have to deal with the uncertainty of the future, and being out of their comfort zone. Adaptability is key, as is networking and communicating what you do, and what sets you apart.
Baker knew the perks and problems of self-employment, as well as the personal and professional sacrifices involved, from running her practice in St. Louis. When she made a personal decision to move to Kansas City, there was no market research involved. Part of moving, she realized, would involve making a practice in Kansas City work no matter what. To get started, she contacted KC Bizcare.
Baker describes her experience with KC Bizcare as “Awesome!” She did not know what was involved in setting up a business, and the step-by-step instructions she received were exactly what she needed. The information was straightforward, and she knew she had all the necessary pieces and was ready to open.
What is Baker’s advice for others starting a business? Call KC Bizcare to make sure all your bases are covered. She also says to look into business centers when starting, to help keep costs down. Baker’s costs were reduced because she did not need to buy furniture or pay utilities or administrative staff. These things were included in her rental space from the business center. She also suggests looking to colleagues for advice. And, an online presence is very important. The work to develop a website done once, but the rewards and benefits continue for much longer. Baker is surprised by how many new client relationships have started because of her website.
