She received an MBA from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1999, completed the Denali Initiative for Social Entrepreneurism Fellowship in 2002 and has a degree in Education from the University of Kansas. Jan and her husband, Dick Purucker, are actively involved in their midtown Southmoreland neighborhood.
Prior to her election, Jan served for sixteen years as the executive director of Mid America Assistance Coalition. At MAAC she managed an annual budget of more than a million dollars and helped direct millions more to local social service organizations serving low income and homeless individuals and families.
Jan’s earliest public service took her to Washington, D.C., where she worked for former Vice President Walter Mondale and others. Back in Kansas City, she was a founding board member of the Ivanhoe Neighborhood Front Porch Alliance and serves on the Mother and Child Health Coalition Advisory Board. As a leader of the Junior League, Jan helped start the Jazzoo fundraiser that has brought millions of dollars to the Kansas City Zoo. She was the president of the Women’s Political Caucus and was appointed by Governor Mel Carnahan to the Missouri Commission on Retirement, Removal and Discipline of Judges. Jan is a former board member of the National Fuel Funds Network.
Jan currently serves as Chair of the Finance, Governance, and Ethics Committee and is a member of the Legislative Committee. She continues to be actively involved in the EPA-mandated sewer overflow control plan, pension reform, and ensuring that the City budget is structurally balanced. Boards currently serving on:
