2000 employment in district by industry
The 2nd District has the second largest percent of the city's workforce of any of the districts. This is attributed to employment centers such as downtown and the I-29/KCI corridor.
Portion of district residents who work in the 2nd District
In 1990, the 2nd District south of the river had approximately 39 percent of its residents that worked within that same area. The significant "employment draw" downtown can be attributed to the extensive amount of land used for office, industrial and public uses in conjunction with the convergence of major arterials, highways and transit routes.
Portion of district workers who live in the district
In 1990, the southern portion of the 2nd District had the lowest percentage of workers who lived in that portion of the district due to the small amount of land devoted to residential areas. The northern portion had the highest percentage of workers who also lived in the same area.
Where district workers live
In 1990, over two-thirds of the workers within the 2nd District north of the river lived within this area or somewhere else in Clay or Platte Counties.
Only 1 percent of the workers who worked in the southern portion of the second council district (primarily downtown) actually lived there. The largest percent lived in other parts of Jackson County inside Kansas City.
2000 transportation to work
Nearly the same percentage of people in the 2nd District drive to work as in other areas of the city. Similarly, the percentage of 2nd District workers using other modes of transportaion is similar to the city as a whole. Transportation to work differs in the district north versus south of the river. North of the river, almost everyone either drives or car pools to work. South of the river, almost one-third of all people use other means to get to work.
2000 unemployment
In 2000, the 2nd District residents had the lowest unemployment in the city, being half of the citywide rate
